But whatever the seedy side of Pattaya's nightlife is like, the city is still one of Thailand's more popular beach resort communities. The whole reason I went with them was because I thought that it would be exciting to get sex for free in Pattaya. MISS UNIVERSE 2000

HISTORY. Representatives from 79 countries, territories and dependencies attended the Miss Universe contest. Certainly, India became the most powerful country in the Beauty World. Miss India, Lara Dutta, has all the qualities to be a Miss Universe-intelligence, beauty, personality, charisma and determination. Finally, Ms. Dutta was the new Miss Universe. It was one of her lifelong dreams to become Miss Universe. Few misses have had careers as long and varied as Lara Dutta.

In a career of more than seven years, she has been professional model, ambassador and actress. Lara once said, "Winning the Miss Universe title is the culmination of a dream".

Like Miss Universe 2000, she went to Saint Marteen, Puerto Rico, USA, Colombia, Thailand, Malaysia, Japan, Switzerland, Venezuela, Mexico, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates. Ms. Dutta became well-known to millions as a women’s rights activist in India. Lara Dutta was one of the best known misses of the 21st century.

At the onset, Venezuela’s Eva Monica Ekvall Johnson was the favorite by experts and journalists. Miss Venezuela reached the finals, but surprisingly, she only came in fourth place. Many people felt that the decision was unfair.

A Puerto Rican won the Miss Universe contest again. Like Margarita Moran (Miss Philippines and Miss Universe 1973) and Janelle Penny Commissiong (Miss Trinidad Tobago and Miss Universe), Miss Puerto Rico, Denisse Quiñones, was crowned also Miss Photogenic Universe.Denisse’s ambition was to become a professional singer.

With Videoconferencing, You Belong.

Who hasn't heard of videoconferencing? It is singularly responsible for many technological breakthroughs in business, law, and government. More importantly, it has become a very powerful social glue for keeping family, friends, and lovers together. And, as videoconferencing sees wider use, more and more people are reaping the benefits of videoconferencing.

Real Stories, Real People
Marge hasn't seen her husband or her daughter for four years now. She left her country behind for greener pastures. But now, thanks to benefits of video-conferencing, she can see through a tiny monitor her little daughter's face and beautiful little reminders of home.

Debbie is studying culinary arts in Paris. She will be getting her certificate in a month. This will be a very memorable occasion for her, and although her mom and dad are half a world away in Bangkok, she knows the benefits of videoconferencing. Her family can see her as she walks up that podium to accept her certificate.

Mike has fallen deeply in love with a girl halfway around the world, and though they haven't seen each other face to face, he knows how she looks. This, he knows, is one benefit of video conferencing. It brings him glimpses of his sweetheart through a 21-inch video screen.

The benefits of videoconferencing, particularly in bridging families and connecting lives, have been nothing short of staggering. It's very cost-effective, so people do not have to spend on prohibitively expensive airfare, or take unnecessary vacations. Airfare and time off work might seem little things at first, but like debt, they accumulate. You just might find yourself frittering away your pension or kissing that promotion goodbye after taking one trip too many to, say, Amsterdam.

Real Time, Face to Face
Another benefit of videoconferencing is real-time face to face communication. Experts believe communication of this nature is crucial to the continuity and vitality of any kind of relationship. Too often, distance has resulted in broken families and broken engagements. To nourish a relationship, all integral components have to be present - constant contact, emotional connection, kinship through shared blood ties and interests. Videoconferencing narrows the location gap. In so doing, it strengthens relationships.

Love, from Across the Seas
Today, expatriates, overseas workers, travelers, and migrants can connect to their loved ones with a click of a button. That they're able to do this at all is priceless, and is yet another testament to how greatly humanity has enjoyed the benefits of videoconferencing. After all, no matter who we are, what we do, or where we are at present, we all have families we wish to come home to.

Understandably, video interaction is a poor substitute for physical contact. Thirty minutes spent talking is nothing compared to a hug. When you're in Africa and your family is in Canada, however, video interaction is as important a lifeline as calls and emails. More than just giving us the means to hear and be heard, videoconferencing helps us celebrate family and the concept of belonging. It helps us reaffirm ties that exist in our minds and hearts.

So, whether you're in a quaint little bistro in Paris, or knee-deep in snow in an alpine village, or driving massive trucks under a sweltering Dubai sun, videoconferencing can bring you home - if only for an hour or a minute.

Reap the benefits of videoconferencing when you visit our site today! From video phones to webcams, we have all the latest and most innovative equipment for video conferencing.

The History of Phuket, Thailand

Phuket, also known as the 'Pearl of the South,' is the largest island in Thailand, spread across 570 sq km. Located in the sparkling as well as clear green water of the Andaman Sea, Phuket is about 890 km from Bangkok. With its dramatic scenery, stunning beaches, amazing coral reefs, and tropical sunshine, Phuket is truly an incredible destination. Apart from these, the island is also rich with its historical past.

Phuket boasts of a long recorded history filled with remarkable events. Throughout its interesting history, Phuket was inhabited by various ethnic tribes who molded their lives according to the place's environment.

The island got its present name from 'Manikram,' a Tamil word meaning 'Crystal Mountain.' But, for most of the part of the history, Phuket was known as Junk Ceylon, the evidence of which is its mention on old Portuguese sea maps. This has also been found mentioned in the book written by Claudius Ptolemy - a Greek geographer - in 157AD.

According to this book, Phuket is thought to have been once a cape, attached to the Thailand's mainland. Later, the peninsula was destroyed due to natural calamities, and as such, it got separated from the land. Further, this book states that, in order to travel to the Malaysian Peninsula, it was required to pass a cape, which according to Ptolemy was the Junk Ceylon, also known as Junk Ceylon. The cape was given a location between the latitudes of 6 N and 8 N, which is believed to be today's Phuket. History has it that the cape was visited by sea merchants from across the globe, since it provided great opportunities to relax and replenish.

The names of various dynasties have also been found mentioned in the recorded history of Phuket. During the 1st century AD, Malaya Peninsula was believed to be a part of the Shivite Empire. Later, the area was dominated by the empires of Srivichai and Siri Tahm. During this period, the region was well-known by its symbol - the dog. In the 13th century, Phuket came into the hands of the Thai power, during which it was a prominent as well as a flourishing city, with a treasure trove of natural pearls, ivory, gems, ambergris, caulk, hides, firewood, and spices.

During the 15th century, Phuket shot to fame as one of the leading tin mining producers of the region. Later, influenced by the rich assets of Phuket, the Dutch made this influential destination as their business region during the 16th century.

Apart from these, scores of merchants and traders from different parts of Europe began to flock to Phuket due to the growing importance of tin. As a result, the then king decided that the area should be governed by a European. Consequently, the place was governed by a French missionary, namely, Renee Charbonneau, between the periods 1681 and 1685. Shortly, the British also began to get attracted with the rich resources of Phuket, and as a result, the East India Company decided to choose Phuket as their base to administer the Malacca Straits. Accordingly, in order to scout the island, the British sent Captain Francis Light, who later married a girl from the island.

Perhaps most important event in the history of Phuket is the attack of the region by Burmese in 1785. However, the Burmese were defeated by the militants under the supervision of two legendary women, Kunying Jan and her sister, Mook. Today, they are famed as the heroines, and a monument has been built on the Thep Kassattri road, in commemoration of their decisive action.

As a result of the growing importance of tin, during the beginning of the 19th century, Chinese laborers began to flock to Phuket, whose strong influence can be still seen in the region. In 1876, a group of Chinese laborers, discontented with their salary and working conditions, began a bloody riot of theft and murder in the island. Then, the locals headed to Wat Chalong in order to get sheltered by two prominent monks. These two monks later convinced the laborers and eventually the place again gained its passivity. One can now find a temple dedicated to these monks in Wat Chalong.

In the 20th century, Phuket was stated a monthon, and was given control of areas such as Ranong, Krabi, Takua-Pah Phang Nga, Satun, and Trang. In 1933, Phuket gained provincial status, and since then, it has been administered by an Interior Ministry-appointed governor.

Phuket still continues its long tradition of welcoming foreigners. It is estimated that more than two million tourists visit here per year, attracted by its serene atmosphere, world-class attractions, and exciting nightlife.

Singapore Top Ten

 1 Riverside

The bulk of Singapore's historical attractions are by the river, so a great place to start a daytrip is at the mouth of the Singapore River. This area is a lovely for a walk, with small green gardens dotted amongst old-style bridges and historical buildings. Maybe take a late afternoon stroll and soak up the peaceful atmosphere before hitting the nightlife hot-spots of Clarke Quay and Boat Quay. Before you have a drink, Riverside is also a good area to get fed. The western end of the river, around Robertson Quay, houses a Japanese expat community, and consequently the Japanese restaurants nearby serve some of the best fare this side of Tokyo. The best places for a splurge with a view are Boat Quay and Clarke Quay, which have many superb and atmospheric riverside restaurants offering cuisine from most corners of the globe. Another good choice is Chijmes, the former Convent of the Holy Infant Jesus and now, since most Singaporeans have lost interest in Christianity, an alluring assemblage of high-end food and drink outlets near the Raffles Hotel. Travellers with refined cultural tastes will enjoy the nightly opera, dance and classical music on offer at the Esplanade Theatre.

There are two options for seeing the area from the air:

G-Max Reverse Bungy. Get strapped in and flung upwards by a giant rubber band at 200 km/h. Do this before, rather than immediately after, dinner.

Singapore Flyer. Singapore's newest tourist attraction, this 150-metre-tall observation wheel, modelled on the London Eye, is the world's tallest. If you can afford it then avoid having to share your capsule with dozens of other people by stumping up the $1,000 (GBP 370) for a private ride. Or maybe justify it as a valid business expense by taking along a business associate – just hope he or she doesn’t return the favour and take you for a ride, too.

2 Orchard Road

Orchard Road and neighboring Scotts Road form Singapore's top shopping district, with several kilometres of busy but fairly quiet roads lined on both sides by practically nothing but shopping malls. Shopping heaven, husband hell.

3 Merlion.

Singapore's official symbol, 8.6 metres tall and weighing 70 tons, spouts water on the south bank of the mouth of the Singapore river. The monument was commissioned by the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board in 1964 to give tourists something to take photos of, as the city is somewhat lacking in spectacular sights. Many Singaporeans regard the monument as a bit of a joke: in Singaporean slang the verb to ‘merlion’ means ‘to vomit’. Popular mainly with Japanese photo-holics.

4 Bugis

Bugis has a colourful, even lurid, past, as the den of iniquity at the centre of the sin city that Singapore once was. Whilst the government’s imprisonment and execution of all the pimps and lowlifes has completely cleaned the place up, one can’t help but mourn the loss of the colour of Singapore’s history a little: the only lurid thing about Bugis these days is the neon signs. Originally named after the bloodthirsty race of pirates who prowled the Straits before their extermination by the British, for a long time the area was Singapore's equivalent of Bangkok’s infamous Patpong. After its sanitisation and conversion into a shopping experience for the whole family, it is now a place where pillaging and looting still occur, but only of the most gullible tourists.

5 China town

Chinatown's main attraction is the jumble of restored shop-houses full of strange boutiques stocking everything from plastic Buddhas to dried seahorses. It’s a great place to wander around at random and see what you can find. Temple aficionados may enjoy checking out the Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, which towers above the area, although whether the Lord Buddha would approve of purported bits of his remains being worshipped is open to debate. Chai-curious tourists will enjoy a visit to the Tea Chapter, at 9 Neil Rd, for a spot of tea drinking, Chinese style. Why not spend an afternoon reading the papers and tea-tasting some of the fancier brands (“would sir care for some ‘Phoenix's Shrubbery’, perchance?”).

6 Little India

Little India remains one of the most colorful and attractive places to visit in Singapore. Ladies in saris and gold bangles sashay by while spices and incense waft in from the doorways and Bollywood's latest soundtracks blare from every other alleyway.

Have your fortune read by Pepe the parrot, but don’t get too jubilant when he tells you that you are about to become massively rich, meet a lovely other half, slim down and become younger – he tells everybody much the same story.

If searching for enlightenment then join the yearly festival of Thaipusam and attach shrines to your flesh with piercing hooks, then walk across town in a day-long procession, dribbling blood on the pavements. Female devotees usually just carry a pot of milk on their head, which is impressive, both because it looks impossible to achieve and because it demonstrates how the gentler half of the species don’t need to bother hang heavy objects off their flesh in their quest for enlightenment. After the festival you will have enough time to recover from your wounds before the festival of Thimithi, in which you can walk on red-hot coals – or alternatively, just marvel at how the David Blaine-style yogis and gurus can possibly do this without sustaining serious injury.

7 Balestier

Singapore Polo Club Dating back to 1886, the colonial-style clubhouse is a good spot to quaff a gin and tonic below lazy ceiling fans while watching the idle rich pootle about on the polo field. Riding lessons are available and, even if the horses leave you cold, the spicy tiffin lunches certainly won’t.

8 North and West

To find out what a sauna full of bugs feel like, go for a steamy jungle hike.  These are five of Singapore’s best:

Bukit Timah Nature Reserve is one of the last places in Singapore that is still covered by primary rainforest. Watch out for monkeys, who look cute but aren’t. Whatever you do don’t smile at them, as baring your fangs is an aggressive gesture and may result in them throwing something unpleasant and smelly at you.

Singapore Zoo If you have written all zoos off as sad, inhumane places then maybe consider having your mind changed by Singapore Zoo, which was endorsed by the late Steve Irwin and is used by Animal Planet for some of its documentaries. The animals are kept in spacious, landscaped enclosures, separated from the visitors by dry or wet moats. Most, except the poor old panting polar bear confined to his air-con den by the blazing heat outside, seem happy with their lot and no more psychologically damaged than some of the creatures on the other sides of the moats. For a cooler experience, board the little train that trundles through the park. Kids will love the Jungle Breakfast, where visitors are joined at a 9am buffet by a host of exotic animals such as orangutans, otters and elephants.

Night Safari A part of the Zoo but located on completely separate grounds that are closed during the day, this is the world's first wildlife park built to be viewed at night. The grounds are in fact larger than the main zoo and only parts are accessible to visitors on foot, so most people opt for the guided tram tour instead. There is a 30-minute animal show at an amphitheatre three times per night: sit in the center section three rows from the front for a big surprise. Stopping at the second tram station is a must as there is a walking path for viewing giraffes, flying squirrels, leopards and lions. Other animals you can expect to see include various types of tigers, elephants, bats, flamingos, porcupines, leopards, otters, badgers, and storks. Child heaven and pretty good for adults too.

Jurong Bird Park The Park specialises in the more exotic and colorful birds from southeast Asia and has a collection of more than 8,000 birds from 600 species. To avoid becoming a soggy mess in the tropical heat, you can circle the park on the Panorail monorail.

The Botanic Gardens This has walking and jogging trails throughout. Outdoor sculptures dot the gardens. Look for the girl on the swing who appears to hang from an invisible chain in the air.

Here are a few things to do that don't involve stomping about in the jungle:

Singapore Turf Club Betting is allowed.

Snow City Interesting enough for residents of the tropics but probably not on the top of the agenda for pallid Europeans escaping their own winter. Sledding, snowboarding and other wintry pursuits, including the inevitable subzero bar.

9 East Coast

Whilst the main attraction is the beaches, the East Coast also offers Singapore's solitary flashback to the past, the rustic little island of Pulau Ubin.

East Coast Park 20 kilometres of free beach on Singapore's southeastern coast: very popular on sunny weekends, despite the rather murky water. The main attractions are the imported white sand and palm trees, plus the locally-grown roller-bladers zooming scantily-clad around. A good choice for families with skate-boarder sons, as skates are available for hire.

Pulau Ubin Singapore's flashback to yesteryear, a little island off the northern coast where people still live in fishing villages on stilts. The island is covered in biking trails and is an excellent spot for a little steamy jungle off-roading.

10 Sentosa

Long a bit of a joke — Singaporean wags like to quip that ‘Sentosa’ actually stands for "So Expensive and Nothing TO See Actually" — Sentosa's attractions have received some much-needed upgrades in recent years, with the worst of the kitsch unceremoniously demolished. Offerings of interest to adults are still quite limited, but there's enough to keep children amused for a day or two. The best way to get there is by the cable car.

Dolphin Lagoon Cute pink dolphins up to their usual tricks.

Fort Siloso Formerly the largest WW2 British naval base in Fortress Singapore, its guns stare balefully out towards the sea in preparation for an enemy attack. Unfortunately, however, the Japanese didn’t oblige by staging a kamikaze assault from the sea. Instead, they rode bikes down the Malayan peninsula. Despite hastily turning the guns around, this was something the British had not prepared for and, after less than a week of fighting, Singapore ignominiously surrendered and the colony's erstwhile rulers were packed off to Changi Prison. The return of the British in 1945 was less than triumphal and it was clear that their time as Singapore’s rulers was up. Granted self-rule in 1955, Singapore briefly joined Malaysia in 1963, but was expelled because the Chinese-majority city objected to the pro-Malay racial biases built into Malaysian legislature. The island became independent in 1965 and the Malaysians haven’t stopped kicking themselves ever since.

Images of Singapore A kitsch and corny child-friendly rendition of the Singapore story, where people of many races have come together to live in harmony. Renovated in 2006, the show now uses the latest technology, but there is not all that much substance under the glitz.

Sentosa Merlion A 37-metre-tall version of the statue by the Singapore River, this one lights up at night and shoots lasers from its eyes. Admission enables you to take the elevator up into its mouth and gaze out over the nearby Port of Singapore, as well as take in some seriously cheesy exhibits downstairs.

Sentosa Luge Up the hill in a ski lift and down again in a steerable bobsled. A good attraction for younger kids, but not very exciting for those over 15.

Songs of the Sea. Multimedia extravaganza with live cast, pyrotechnics, water jets and lasers. Very popular, so book ahead, especially on weekends. Kitsch, but fun.

Underwater World. Features a walk-through aquarium with lots of sharks. Impressive.

Beaches By the standards of the region, these are mediocre, but if all you need is some sand for the children to play in, they will suffice - just make sure you don’t swallow any of the murky water.

Fish Reflexology For a spa treatment with a difference, have fish nibble the dead skin off your feet. You have a choice between ‘gentle’ Turkish fish and ‘aggressive’ African ones: neither will cause damage, but the African ones are really ticklish. The treatment concludes with foot reflexology or head and shoulder massage, performed by masseuses of the more customary species.

Sentosa Golf Club The only golf club in Singapore open to the public, it features two famously challenging 18-hole courses and hosts the yearly Barclays Singapore Open.

Spa Botanica. Singapore first self-proclaimed ‘tropical garden spa’. Out of this world.

Pattaya – Meaning South West Monsoon Wind

The city of Pattaya is located along the Gulf of Thailand, on its East Coast. This tourist city plays host to more than 5.4 million visitors, with many high rise skyscrapers and a reputation as a city that never sleeps. It was during the 1960s that Pattaya began to focus on tourism as opposed to fishing for its inhabitants' livelihood. There is also a large expat community in Pattaya, many from the UK and from Russia. Thai people from Bangkok escaped the worst of the heat and pollution in their capital city by recognising the benefits of the sea air and began holidaying here. Pattaya became a recognised beach resort for many of the servicemen stationed at U-Tapao, the US base in Rayong province, during the Vietnam War with the result that Pattaya acquired a rather suspect reputation. As the Vietnam War came to a conclusion and the servicemen were shipped home, Pattaya lost its identity, resurrected later when it came to be put on the tourist map during the era of mass tourism. Pattaya remained a haunt for single men seeking out local girls, a reputation that has remained until quite recently when the Thai Government began to legislate against the lucrative sex industry, attempting to make Pattaya a respectable place for families to bring their children on holiday. Petty crime and pollution remained rife, despite the Pattaya City Act which appointed a local Council-Manager to oversee the self-administrating municipality - an act which did not particularly find favour with the local residents of Pattaya. In 2008 the Thai Government imposed a restriction on alcohol sales designed to stop the 24-hour image portrayed abroad, with the intention of greatly limiting the continuing sex industry that continued to grow. Family tourism has, however, developed despite its suspect reputation, with 35,000 hotel rooms being available for tourism during 2005 and families from the Eastern European countries and from Scandinavia finding Pattaya a place they enjoyed holidaying in. Apart from the famous sweep of Pattaya Beach, there is a huge range very beautiful scenery. A visit to Mae Hong Son mountains is absolutely delightful, with its breathtaking scenery. If you fancy a change of beachfront there is always a trip to the Andaman Islands, limestone islands thrust up from the Andaman Sea. With Thai music and dance, the food and the architecture you will be really spoiled for choice and find you will want to return to Pattaya again and again.

A Journey Through Cambodia

Cambodia. Known as The Heart of Darkness, it is one of the most heavily land mined countries in the world. With its history of genocide and war, it is not the first place that people think of traveling to when planning a vacation. However Cambodia is a country that has a lot to offer the adventurous traveler. Less crowded than Thailand, its neighbor to the west, it has everything a tourist could want.

Temples, beaches, jungle, culture and nightlife; it will keep you busy for weeks on end.

Entering Cambodia by bus from Thailand, you will instantly feel the difference between the two countries. The smooth paved tarmac from Bangkok gives way to bumpy dirt roads with giant potholes. You suddenly feel as though you are in the Wild West of South East Asia.

The rough ride is worth the bruises though. Once you arrive at Seam Reap to see the countries main attraction, Angkor Wat you will forget all about your suffering. Built in the 12 century by the Khmer Empire it has endured centuries of rain and war.

Mother nature has almost swallowed it up as trees and vegetation grow right through some of the temples floors and walls. Great efforts have been made in restoration over the years and many temples have been restored to their original grandeur. The Main Temple of Angkor Wat is in pristine condition and is a breathtaking sight to see. Its three main towers jut into the air as high as 66 meters (215 ft) from its 1 square km base.  The fascinating temple of Ta Prom has been left in its original state with vines and roots twisting through the complex as trees rise through its roof.

One can spend days exploring the temples of Angkor. 108 buildings cover 500 acres of land. You can hire a tuk tuk or rent a bicycle to move you through the grounds with ease and take you to the outer temples. Whether you walk up to the top of the main temple of Angkor Wat, take a hot air balloon ride over the ruins or sit high on Bakheng Hill to watch sunset over the complex, you will be mesmerized by its scope and beauty.

Once you have had your fill of temples, it is time to head to the country's capitol Phnom Penh. Take a stroll along the waterfront of the Mekong River and check out the grand Royal Palace. Try some fried insects at the Central Market or head over to street 51 to party the night away at The Heart of Darkness Bar.

The most compelling and profoundly moving sight in Phnom Pen is the Toul Sleng Museum. Not for the faint of heart, this former school building is a reminder of just how cruel the human race can be. It was here that Pol Pot's army held prisoners and tortured them until they gave names of family and friends who in turn were arrested. People were detained for the simple reason of being a scholar, a teacher, and a student. Anyone who posed a threat to the Khmer Rouge was rounded up and killed. 2 Million people were murdered during Pol Pots reign and the Toul Sleng museum documents this crime in great detail.

Many people were taken from Toul Sleng to the Killing Fields, 15 km outside of Phnom Penh. It was here that the worst atrocities of the time occurred. Men, women and children were lined up and murdered here by the thousands. A large monument housing the skulls of the victims stands in the centre of it all, honoring the people who gave their life.

It is a devastating place to visit, but as with everything in life, without the knowledge of history, we cannot learn from our past. As difficult as it is to see, it does an honor to the people to have their memory preserved and have their stories told.

The Killing Fields are situated on a beautiful sight. Farmland and forests surround the property and it is a gentle reminder when you hear children playing nearby, that life does go on.

After such an emotional ordeal, a good place to go and clear your mind is Sihanoukville. Cambodia's beach town is chill and relaxing. Local children play in the warm water and girls walk by selling fruit and seafood. Take a snorkeling trip out to the islands or eat at one of the many restaurants. Its beautiful beaches are lined with grassy huts and lush vegetation.

After you have had your fill of sun and sand head to Kampot to cool down. This quiet town on the Kampong Bay River is a nice change of pace from the bustling Sihanoukville. Enjoy a Tiger Beer at one of the restaurants on the water, or walk through the quiet streets to see the colonial architecture.

You can book a day trip to Bokor Hill from Kampot. A former French Hill Station, it sits high in the Elephant Mountains overlooking the Bay of Thailand. It is an eerie feeling walking around the abandoned Casino, but you can imagine the grandeur that it once was. A guided walk through the jungle to the waterfall is an added adventure to the already harrowing truck ride up the mountain.

Visiting Cambodia is a magical travel. The people are friendly and welcoming, its temples are the best in the world and its beaches rival anywhere. Backpackers and tourists are quickly discovering this hidden gem and it is a bargain to travel through. For as little as $4 per night you can stay in a clean and comfortable room. Don't waste time though; this unspoiled destination won't last long.

Thai Buddhism – Thailand Buddhism in Present Day Part 2

The influences of Buddhism can be seen in all aspects of the Thai life and culture. In the home, people keep for worship the Buddha images of various sizes on small altar-tables. While travelling, they wear small Buddha images around their necks as objects of veneration and recollection or as amulets for adornment and protection. When passing sacred places like the Royal Chapel of the Emerald Buddha, devout Buddhists never fail to pay respect to them. Many times during the year they hold and attend festivals at a monastery. Occasionally they go on a pilgrimage to some favourite shrines located in a remote place. Monastery buildings such as the Uposatha hall and the repository of Buddha images are usually the most beautiful and ornate buildings in the village. The Buddha's teachings and Buddhist literature such as the Jataka tales have inspired Thai literature and most of the Thai art forms, especially mural paintings which cover the interior walls of most temples. Pali and Sanskrit are recognized as classical languages. A large number of Thai words, especially those used in royal language and writ-ten language are derived from Pali and Sanskrit. Scholars writing textbooks usually turn to Pali and Sanskrit roots for modern technical vocabulary.

BUDDHISM AS LIVED AND CHERISHED
BY THE THAI PEOPLE
In former days, when Thai men were young, they served as temple boys in the monasteries and were given instruction in reading, writing and simple arithmetic as well as in religion and morals. Through traditional ordination which is still observed today, they are bound to the Order by ties of experience or close relationship with the monks who are their former sons, relatives or friends. At least they live in the Buddhist environment in which they are linked with the religion by ties of custom, by attending religious rites, ceremonies and temple festivals, or by benefiting, either directly or indirectly, from some activities and spiritual influence of religious institutions. Buddhism is their national heritage, the glory of their country which they feel bound to preserve. Even those who are Buddhists merely by name benefit from, and are influenced by, Buddhism in some or other ways. Their cycle of life turns around activities directly or indirectly connected with Buddhism.

Devout Buddhists may give food offerings regularly in the morning, send money contributions to their neighbourhood monasteries, or contribute to some meritorious causes such as building an Uposatha hall elsewhere. Thai calendars usually show a special day of every week which is known as Wan Phra, or the Buddhist holy day, when the pious are often especially active in their merit-making. They may take food offerings to the monasteries or go to hear special sermons and observe additional precepts there, There are also Buddhist discussions or sermons on the radio which they can listen to, and Buddhist programs on television to watch on such days.

Some larger monasteries hold special programs on Saturday and Sunday, the official holidays of the week, so that working people may be able to benefit from their service. Many boys and girls go to attend classes at Buddhist Sunday schools which are conducted in monasteries both in Bangkok and in the provinces. The first of the Buddhist Sunday schools was founded at Mahachula Buddhist University in B.E. 2501 (1958 C.E.). The number of Buddhist Sunday schools increased rapidly during the last two decades, and 297 have been founded up to the present time.
