Working In Thailand – How I Escaped The English Teaching Trap

Teaching English is what most people do if they want to stay in Thailand, myself included. I was pretty bored with it although I was still enjoying life in Bangkok. It's a crazy place and I enjoyed living there but it was the islands where I loved to go as soon as I had any time off, in particular, Koh Chang.

On a night out in Ratchada I got talking to an oldish American guy. He was surrounded by girls. Old guys surrounded by attractive girls are not unusual in Bangkok and I had gotten used to it long ago!

Anyway he seemed pretty cool and we started chatting. He did most of the chatting actually. Living in Bangkok I always thought it best to listen to what people had to say and suss them out when meeting anyone new.

He told me how he didn't work anymore and just lived off of affiliate marketing. I told him I knew what affiliate marketing was and that I had a couple of websites that had adsense on, which had made me exactly $4 over the last year!

He went on to explain how I was thinking about it all wrong and that I had to this and that and learn something else etc etc. I was listening but not paying too much attention.

Living in Bangkok, I was used to hearing people talking about crazy stuff and a lot of it was going in one ear and out the other.

It was a Friday night and I had a packed weekend of teaching ahead of me, such is the life of an English teacher in a private English school in Bangkok. I decided to call it a night. It was then that the old guy paid his bill and my bill and started splashing out money to all the girls with him.

He told me he was off to Koh Samui, a rather nice but touristy island to work from his laptop now that broadband had become available nationwide in Thailand. He said that he had no reason to be in Bangkok any longer.

That really planted a seed in my head and I began to wish I had paid more attention to what he was saying. Never the less, the end of my teaching career had begun!

After many failed attempts I actually started making money from affiliate marketing. I learned the hard way and it was a long time before I discovered where to really learn about it.

I don't make the kind of money that the old American dude was proclaiming but I don't have to teach anymore and I do spend most of my time on Koh Chang, which is what I always wanted.

I now enjoy my time at Lonely Beach earning more money than I was teaching in Siam.

It took me longer than it should have to start making money because I wasn't getting the right information.
